Southwest Quadrant – Cedar Rapids History

Osgood Shepard was the first settler and arrived in what is now called Cedar Rapids in 1838. First known as Columbus, its current name was selected because of the rapids of the river and the red cedar trees that grew along the river banks. In 1870, Kingston was added to the city. Kingston Village was named as a nod to this history.

In 2008, the flood badly damaged the city, and the destruction hit the Southwest Quadrant. The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library was badly damaged. Thanks to grant funding, they were able to rebuild the museum stronger than ever just a few blocks from its original site.

Southwest Quadrant – Cedar Rapids Community

The Southwest Quadrant is home to both historical and contemporary neighborhoods. And from Hoover Elementary School to Jefferson High School, this Quadrant is filled with quality schools in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.

The College Community School District is also located on a 500-acre site in the Southwest Quadrant. It is a growing district that serves approximately 6,000 students in five elementary schools, an intermediate school, a middle school, a ninth-grade academy, a high school and two off-site programs.

Kirkwood Community College, located in this quadrant, identifies community needs, provides accessible, quality education and training and promotes opportunities for lifelong learning.

The Southwest Quadrant also offers a lot of green space for people who are looking to enjoy a day outdoors and away from the urban feel of Cedar Rapids.

Attractions and Entertainment

National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library: This is one of the most notable landmarks in the Cedar Rapids Area. It documents the immigration of these groups to the United States and celebrates their culture and how it influenced the local community.

Jones Park: This 236-acre park includes an 18-hole golf course, softball diamonds, a swimming pool, tennis courts and soccer fields. It also features pavilions, disc golf course, a cross-country running course and so much more.

Westdale Mall: Westdale opened in 1979 but, by 2012, the property suffered from deferred maintenance, deteriorating facility and site infrastructure, high tenant vacancy and frequent owner turnover. Since 2013, the new developer has demolished nearly 600,000 square feet of buildings creating three stand-alone structures. Retailers include Ross Dress for Less, Petsmart, Tru by Hilton, Einsten’s Bagels, Noodles and Company and so much more.

The Hotel at Kirkwood Center: Located just minutes from the Eastern Iowa Airport, Interstates 80 and 380, downtown Cedar Rapids and so much more, this stylish hotel and event center was named Best Banquet/Event Facility for 2018 by the Corridor Business Journal. The Hotel’s high service standards earned the American Automobile Association Four Diamond Award for lodging seven years in a row. It is the only Four Diamond award winner in Cedar Rapids and one of four Four Diamond rated hotels in all of Iowa.

Eastern Iowa Airport: The Eastern Iowa Airport has been an integral part of the state’s aviation system since the first commercial flight departed in 1947. The airport evolved through the years using fiscally sound management and forward-thinking leadership. Located conveniently off of Interstate 380, this airport is minutes from many destinations.
