Peosta History

Peosta, Iowa is named after Chief Peosta of the Meskwaki tribe, a respected Native American leader who once lived in the Dubuque County area. Chief Peosta was known to be a close friend of early settler Julien Dubuque, the founder of the City of Dubuque. Local history also suggests that Dubuque married Chief Peosta’s daughter, reportedly named Potosa.

For much of its history, Peosta remained a small rural community. As recently as 1990, the town had a population of only about 100 residents. The foundation for future growth began in the 1960s with the construction of the four lane U.S. Highway 20 along the city’s southern edge, providing quick access to Dubuque. Additional development followed when Northeast Iowa Technical Institute, now known as Northeast Iowa Community College, opened in 1979.

Peosta’s major growth began in the 1990s when the city’s industrial park expanded and attracted new businesses to the area. Since then, the community has experienced rapid population growth, increasing from just over 100 residents in 1990 to more than 1,300 today. This significant growth has continued to bring new housing, businesses, and services to Peosta, making it one of the fastest growing communities in the Dubuque region.

Peosta Community

The city has two elementary schools (Peosta Elementary and Seton Catholic School), its own community center, two hotels, four restaurants, a country club, church, industrial park and expanding neighborhoods.
