Bellevue History

The town was originally called Belleview or Bell’s View after John D. Bell, one of the earliest residents. Bellevue was incorporated in 1833. It is the oldest town in Jackson County and was originally the county seat. In the early days many bandits—known as the Brown Gang—took to hiding in the woods along the Maquoketa River. In 1840, a posse of angry citizens rounded up the gang in an action that became known as the Bellevue War in which a number of people were killed. The 13 criminals who survived the “war” were whipped and banished from the county. From 1841 to 1848, the county seat moved between Bellevue and Andrew several times before settling in Maquoketa in 1878, where it has remained.
