Davenport History

Davenport is named for George Davenport—a native of Lincolnshire, England—who settled on Rock Island in 1816. He came as a supplier for Fort Armstrong, which was constructed as a frontier fort that year, and he sold provisions and supplies to the soldiers. In 1835, he bought land from Antoine LeClaire—Davenport’s first resident—on the west bank of the Mississippi, adjacent to Rock Island, and helped lay out the town that bears his name.

Scott County was formed by an act of the Wisconsin Territorial legislature in 1837. Davenport and neighboring Rockingham both campaigned to become the county seat, The city with the most votes in the February 1838 election would become the county seat. On the eve of the election, Davenport citizens acquired the temporary service of Dubuque laborers so they could vote in the election, winning the election. Rockingham supporters protested the elections since the laborers from Dubuque were not Scott County residents and results were not certified.

A second election was held the following August. To avoid another import of voters, the governor set a 60-day residency requirement for all voters. Davenport was again the victor by only two votes. Because the margin of victory was so close, a third election in the summer of 1840 was held. As the August election drew nearer, Rockingham residents grew tired of the county seat cause, and the efforts of Davenporters were difficult to challenge. Davenport easily won the third election. Consequently, to ensure that the county seat issue would not be played out again, Davenport built the first county courthouse.

Community

With the mix of home styles and historical areas highlighted throughout the city, Davenport is the perfect mix of Victorian living in a modern city. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the city has over 20 parks and more than 12 miles of recreational paths for biking or walking. In the middle of the city—bordering VanderVeer Park—is a selection of Victorian and Tudor revival style homes. The park was one of the first beautification projects completed by the city and is styled after the famous Central Park in New York City, complete with a fountain, rose garden and large botanical center.

The Village of East Davenport (“The Village”) on the east side of the city holds the popular neighborhood, McClellan Heights, with historical homes and small specialty shops. If you venture downtown Davenport you will see some of the largest buildings that the city holds along with a 5-star hotel, many restaurants, and popular nightclubs.
