Dyersville History

Dyersville’s history began in the spring of 1846, when ten families from Bavaria traveled up the Mississippi River from St. Louis and settled in a gentle valley west of Dubuque. Drawn by fertile farmland and opportunity, the settlers established a strong agricultural community that would shape the area’s future. In 1847, James Dyer arrived from Somersetshire, England, bringing leadership and resources that helped guide early development. Under his direction, an intensive building effort began, and by February 13, 1849, the growing settlement became known as Dyersville.

Economic hardships during the panics of 1857 and 1873 led many English settlers to relocate, and German immigrants gradually became the dominant population, continuing the area’s farming traditions. In 1888, local farmers and merchants came together to build a larger Catholic church to serve the expanding community. St. Francis Xavier Church was later elevated to a Minor Basilica in 1956 and remains one of Dyersville’s most recognizable landmarks, attracting visitors from across the region.

Dyersville gained national recognition in 1945 when Fred Ertl Sr. began crafting scale model farm tractors in his basement, launching what would become the Ertl Company. The success of these toys helped earn Dyersville the title “Farm Toy Capital of the World,” and today the city is home to the National Farm Toy Museum and popular annual toy shows that celebrate its unique heritage.

Dyersville also offers strong private education options. Parochial students attend St. Francis Xavier Elementary School for grades PreK–6 and Beckman Catholic High School for grades 7–12, both located within the community. These schools are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and operate under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque, providing faith-based educational opportunities alongside strong academic programs.

The Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, one of the few minor Roman Catholic basilicas located outside a major metropolitan area, stands as a stunning architectural and spiritual landmark. Dyersville is also home to the Ertl Company and its outlet store, along with the National Farm Toy Museum, celebrating the community’s heritage as the “Farm Toy Capital of the World.”
