What is now a picturesque residential community once served as Fort McClellan, a mid-19th century military training camp where Iowa Civil War regiments prepared for service. After the war ended, the land remained largely untouched until the early 1900s, when local developers recognized its unique landscape and began transforming it into a residential neighborhood.

Today, McClellan Heights features approximately 400 unique homes, many dating back to the early 1900s, each offering distinctive architecture and character. The neighborhood was heavily marketed in its early years by John Ruhl, and the Ruhl family continues to maintain strong ties to the community. Recognized for its historic significance and timeless beauty, McClellan Heights was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. With its blend of history, natural scenery, and architectural charm, the neighborhood remains one of Davenport’s most sought-after places to call home.
