Quad Cities History

In 1832, General Winfield Scott and Sauk Chief Keokuk signed a treaty that brought an end to the Black Hawk War, opening the region to increased settlement. As riverboat transportation proved reliable and efficient, more settlers were drawn to what would become the Quad Cities. During the Industrial Revolution, developers recognized the area’s potential, using the power of the Mississippi River to support growing industries.

A major turning point came in 1848, when John Deere relocated his operations to Moline, helping establish the region as a center for manufacturing and economic growth. To further support westward expansion and transportation, the Rock Island Railroad Company constructed the first bridge across the Mississippi River in 1856, solidifying the Quad Cities as a key hub for commerce and development.
