Orion History

Originally known as Deanington, the village of Orion, Illinois was founded on December 26, 1853. From its earliest days, the community has been shaped by residents who take pride in maintaining and improving their hometown. Over the years, local volunteers and civic groups have worked together on projects ranging from building parks to restoring community landmarks such as the town bandshell, helping preserve Orion’s welcoming character and shared spaces.

This strong sense of community pride continues today. In 2018, Orion celebrated an important milestone with a bicentennial-style community celebration, featuring Civil War–era music and traditional period dancing. Events like these reflect Orion’s commitment to honoring its history while bringing residents together to celebrate the town’s heritage and future.

Central Park:
Central Park is a centerpiece of the Orion community and home to the town’s beautiful historic bandstand. Built in 1913 and recently restored, the bandstand serves as a gathering place for concerts, festivals, and community events throughout the year.
