Geneseo History

The Geneseo, Illinois area was first settled in the mid-1830s when eight families from Genesee County, New York—located just east of Buffalo—traveled west to establish a religious community. These families arrived in 1836 and 1837 and brought with them strong values centered around faith, education, and community responsibility. They were also outspoken opponents of slavery and prohibited the use of alcohol within their community. Because of these beliefs, Geneseo became a station on the Underground Railroad, helping escaped enslaved individuals travel north to states where slavery was illegal.

Transportation played an important role in Geneseo’s early growth. In 1854, the Rock Island Railroad was built directly through town, creating new economic opportunities and strengthening connections to other communities across the region. Just one year later, Geneseo was officially incorporated in 1855, marking an important milestone in its development.

Additional infrastructure further supported the area’s growth. The Hennepin Canal, which connects the Illinois River to the Mississippi River, was constructed just north of Geneseo and completed in 1907, providing another transportation and trade route for the region.

Geneseo has also developed a modern manufacturing presence. In 1974, Springfield Armory, Inc. was founded in the city and has since grown into one of the largest firearm manufacturers in the United States, employing approximately 135 people locally and contributing to the area’s economy.
