Albany History

The first settlers in what is now Albany, Illinois arrived shortly after the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832. Among the earliest settlers was the Slocum family, who established a small community along the Mississippi River. The settlement was originally called Port Newbury, then later VanBuren, before the name Albany was officially adopted in 1836.

Albany’s early development was closely tied to nearby Camanche, Iowa, located directly across the river. After the United States opened the Iowa territory for settlement following the war, pioneers traveled up the Mississippi River and began establishing towns throughout the region. Edwin Corbin and David Mitchell were among those who helped formally establish Albany in 1835. With steamboats regularly traveling along the Mississippi, Albany quickly became a center for trade and commerce for surrounding river communities.

A tragic event on June 3, 1860, changed the course of the town’s growth. A powerful tornado struck the area, devastating both Camanche and Albany and causing significant loss of life and property. The destruction slowed development in the region, but the community endured and rebuilt.

Today, Albany’s rich history and early role as a Mississippi River settlement remain an important part of its identity. Much of the town’s story and heritage has been preserved and documented by historian Helen Hanson in her book Albany Echoes.
