Prophetstown History

Although Prophetstown, Illinois is a small community, it has a rich and fascinating history. Local lore suggests that around 1800, the area was even considered as a potential site for the nation’s capital due to its central location within the lower 48 states. The city’s name comes from Wabokieshiek (White Cloud), a spiritual leader of the Sauk people and an advisor to Black Hawk during the Black Hawk War. Known as “The Prophet,” Wabokieshiek and his followers lived in the area that is now preserved as Prophetstown State Park. In 1832, during the conflict, the settlement was destroyed.

Today, Prophetstown continues to honor its past through historic homes, landmarks, and preserved sites scattered throughout the community. One notable location is Eclipse Park, the former site of the Eclipse Lawn Mower Factory, which reflects the town’s industrial heritage.
